John Finlaison (1783–1860) was a Scottish civil servant, government actuary and the first president of the Institute of Actuaries. John was born under the name Finlayson, however, was better known under the name of Finlaison. ==Early life== John Finlaison, eldest son of Donald Finlayson and Isabella Sutherland, was born in Thurso, Caithness on 27 August 1783. His father died from an attack of brain fever on 28 November 1790, at the early age of twenty-nine, leaving his mother a widow, with three children John (seven years), Christian (three years) and William (four months old).
